What to Do When Something Goes Wrong
The 4th of July is quickly approaching, which means families everywhere will be packing up and heading out to cabins, campsites, and having a great weekend celebrating. But what happens if you get in an auto accident out-of-state? We’re here to help you prepare for the worst, all while hoping for the best.
Most auto insurance policies cover all areas in the United States, U.S. territories, and even Canada, so if you do happen to get into an accident, you shouldn’t have any issues submitting a claim. Some states also implement a “no-fault” system, which means if you’re injured in an accident, your insurance company will pay to cover the cost of your injuries, not the other driver. States that have a no-fault system include Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Utah. If you don’t live in a state or are traveling to one that has this program, you are allowed to pursue benefits from the driver that was at fault for the accident, however, this can be a lengthy and costly process for all involved.
Reporting an Accident
If you do happen to get into an accident, handle it the same way you would if you were in your home state. Stay calm, call the proper authorities, check for injuries, and get in contact with your insurance company. Call your insurance company’s claims department so that you can report your accident in as much detail as possible while it’s still fresh in your mind. If your car needs to be towed, you can also ask your insurance company to contact a nearby towing service and repair shop. Just be aware that your insurance may not cover the cost of a tow truck.
